And We Don’t Trust the Government to Run Health Care Why?

Via DCist, a fine illustration of my hard-earned tax dollars at work. After three blizzards and two and a half weeks of excruciatingly slow melting, the DC government finally remembered it had a massive $120,000 Snow Melter sitting on a back lot somewhere:

Let me get this straight: Alan Colmes is actually claiming that CO2 emissions in the atmosphere caused tectonic plates to shift 22 miles beneath the Earth’s surface?!

One year ago today, I walked down to Lafayette Park across the street from the White House, then-brand-new Flip cam in hand, and shot some video at the first Tea Party in DC. Dozens of similar rallies were held across the nation that day, kicking off what would become one of the most widespread and effective grassroots movements in American history.

Looking back at the video from that day, I’m struck by the foresight demonstrated by Brendan Steinhauser of FreedomWorks, who declared: “This is only the beginning! This is a shot… that is going to be heard around the country!” How right he was.

I just ran across this online-video success story, which outlines how Goodwill Industries recently teamed up with Miss DC to showcase how a young, hip urbanite on a budget can turn to Goodwill for quality home decor and clothing. According to content marketing expert Joe Pulizzi, the results are “amazing” —

Retail sales up 7%
Retail traffic up 13%
Donations increase of 18%
450% increase in online traffic from before series launch; traffic continues to grow
$150,000 in earned media coverage

One of the videos is embedded below – it’s well-produced, but not heavy on special effects or sophisticated editing, by any means. This is something that pretty much any political organization or small business can produce with just a little help from somebody with even very basic video production skills:

The Telegraph writes:

“On February 14 2005, YouTube’s co-founders, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Javed Karim registered the site’s domain name and set out to “create a place where anyone with a video camera and an Internet connection could share a story with the world…”

The site certainly changed my life. A year and a half ago I didn’t even own a video camera. Today I produce videos for a living.
